January Designer's Edit: 10 Things That Illuminate

There's something about January that feels mid-sentence to me.  I'm ready for the warmth and burst of activity in spring, and yet I crave the coziness of hearth and home that winter provides.  This time of year finds me in need of a lift in spirit and inspiration after the Holiday flurry settles...something illuminating from without and within.  In this edit I've shared a few things that do just that for me, and I hope will do the same for you!

1. The color + texture of our Luxe Necklace lend a nice pick me up on overcast days.  A crisp white shirt really makes the color of the labradorite stone pop.  It's equally as nice with print that's not too busy to really play up the textures.

2. This time of year finds me ready for spring, yet still yearning to cozy up by the fire. A nice glow in the studio is always a comfort, so I can't wait to try ILLUME's Woodfire Candle.

3.  Ah, my Third Verse Spa Works Sweet Tea Sugar Scrub...I have no words. Other than I get it at Fireflies in Spring Hill, Tennessee.

4.  Just looking at the stone of our Mirabel Ring makes me happy. I can't get enough of it.  It will make you happy too :)

5. I've used Aveda's brilliant universal styling creme for years. I love how it softens my hair this time of year and protects it from dryness, not to mention the scent is fabulous.

6.  The metalsmith in me loves a great chain belt! I have a silver one I wear quite often, but I'm also eyeing this Chanel inspired Marion Chain Belt from Tory Burch.

7.  Everyone needs a spinner ring, and our Spinning Vistas Ring is so comfortable! I wear it almost everyday.

8.  Would someone order this shirt for me  Never mind, I just did!

9.  My husband gifted Blue Birds No.10 Bubble Bath to me this Christmas and I love it! Fabulous scent, and looks beautiful on the vanity. It's available locally at Cosmetics Market.

10. I'm an office supply junkie and love picking out a planner for the New Year! I heard about the Passion Planner and decided to give it a try.  It's a calendar, journal, sketchbook, gratitude log, goal setting guide, to do list all wrapped up in one volume.  (Waiting eagerly for it to ship as we speak!)

September Designer's Edit: 10 Things That Make Me HAPPY!

I can't believe it's already September! This Summer has flown by - in a good way. Summer is notoriously a slower time than usual, so here in the studio we're happy to gear up for a fresh season and all the newness that a turning of the page brings. I thought I'd begin our new "designer's edit" feature by sharing a few of my "everydays".  These are pieces and products that have become my go-to's time and time again. So their place in this post is well deserved and much loved.  Enjoy!

1. Soon after it came off the jewelry bench, our Colonnade Pendant became a well-worn piece. The length makes it perfect for layering with a shorter necklace. I like to layer mine with a celtic cross pendant I picked up in Scotland!
2. I adore this color in my home and on my nails!
3. - 5. Ah, the sweetness of a perfect ring grouping! The Gala Ring from our Pure Collection features a faceted white topaz gem of at least a 10 carats (some are 13 - no two are exactly alike) and adds a bit of drama to everyday. I either layer our Smoky Quartz and Gold Stacks, or I might wear one on my pointer and wear the other as a midi.
6. Fairest Nude is perfect for layering with a slightly darker lip pencil for evening or wear it alone for daytime. I've loved it for years.
7. I've enjoyed this light fragrance recently and plan on wearing it right through fall.  My husband gifted it to me and I've loved it ever since.
8. This might be the most amazing product I've ever used. It's a keeper!
9. Dear Fall, please send your crisp air soon so I can wear my new Banana Republic Jacket. Thank you.
10. Oh Skechers, how do I love thee? Let me count the ways...30 minutes everyday.

Designer Spotlight: d. marlene jewelry

Designer Spotlight: d. marlene jewelry

Deanna Eller-Goodin is the designer behind d. marlene jewelry. Each new collection makes me love her pieces more and more. The gemstones she uses are stunning and all of her pieces have an elegance and an edge to them that make them perfect to wear by themselves or layered with other pieces. I love that you can see the thought and effort Deanna puts into making each and every piece. It’s what makes them so special. Not only is Deanna super talented, she’s one of the sweetest people I’ve worked with. I always look forward to her booth at the Scene’s Fashion for a Fraction. Here, Deanna shares her background with us and her insight on her jewelry making process. Now I can’t wait to see the Sine Cera collection.

When did you first start designing jewelry? When did you launch d. marlene jewelry?
This is taking me way back! I started designing bridal accessories (garters, ring pillows, veils) during an internship with Nashville Bridal guru Jeanne Dudley Smith for my degree in Fashion Merchandising back in 1993. Even though I’m both creative and analytical, I’ve always gravitated toward the creative side. So while crunching numbers in various finance roles in the music industry for 13 years, I was designing accessories for bridal clients on the side. All my brides were asking for jewelry, so to provide their need I said “Yes. I can do that!” I’ve always loved jewelry, but it found me, really. I realized later the need to design fashion forward jewelry for everyone – not just brides – and began doing so. I signed up for a metalsmithing course at Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts, and that’s when the magic started happening! Since then I’ve honed my skills through Sarratt Art Studios at Vanderbilt and Middle Tennessee Gem and Mineral Society. I launched d. marlene jewelry full time in 2009.

Who or what inspires your designs?
On my first trip to Monument Valley in Arizona I remember thinking “I should have been a geologist!” I had a rock collection as a child and my love for all things natural continued through to geology class in college. This was my introduction to Mohs scale and testing, formation studies, and actually observing what makes a mineral (stone) beautiful. I’m thankful that now as a jewelry designer I’m actually able to work with what I found intriguing as a child. Many times the stone is what inspires the design. One client said it this way, “You have captured the best representation of the stones and have put them in the best possible light.” What a compliment, and a standard that I try to attain with every design. Many times in moments right before falling asleep I find that my mind clears and ideas and images will come. I can see at that moment how metal will connect and how it will “work.”

What are your favorite materials to work with?
I work mostly with sterling silver, but am slowly adding 14 karat gold elements. Aesthetically speaking I used to prefer all silver, but I’ve been enjoying mixed metals and the contrast is really beautiful. And of course I love working with the stones themselves! I’ve really fallen in love with the labradorite in our PURE Collection – the aurora borealis effect it displays is quite stunning. I designed a few of the pieces with an open back, to allow the light to heighten this effect. I want all of my pieces to find a good home, but sometimes it’s really quite hard to let them go!

What are some of your favorite pieces from your current collection?
Our current PURE Collection is by far my favorite collection! It comes from a place of returning to the basics in the design process as well as emotionally. I was at a point as a designer that I needed to just enjoy the simple tasks of making jewelry…filing, sawing, soldering, etc. and “be in the moment.” The Lord really poured through me to create these pieces. One piece in particular is the Luxe Necklace. It has an ancient Phoenician feel that came through in the design process. This is one piece that was created with an open back to let the light really play up the coloring in the stone. I also love the asymmetry of the Simplification Cuff. It’s both edgy and elegant which is very d. marlene.

Do you have plans for your next collection? What can we expect to see?
The next collection will be our Sine Cera Collection. Sine Cera is Latin meaning “without wax.” From it, we derive our English word “sincerity.” During the Italian Renaissance many inferior sculptors would use a layer of clear wax to smooth the marble and hide any imperfections and pits of the marble. Fine China manufacturers also used this practice. Only by holding the piece up to the light could one discern any cracks beneath the surface. The light exposed what was really glossed over. When stamped with the phrase “Sine Cera,” it meant the piece was “without wax.” Sine Cera is valuable in design because it’s about truth and being real. The refinement concept that was started with our PURE Collection is carrying over in our Sine Cera Collection. I’m using Bronzite which is quite beautiful along with Golden Rutile Quartz and Citrine gemstones. I’m excited to introduce spinner rings to the line in mixed metals.

Do you make custom pieces for your clients?
Yes! I’m happy to consult with clients on bespoke pieces.

What current trends do you love?
I tend not to follow trends but gravitate more toward timeless, staple pieces with a few unexpected twists in detail thrown in (maybe it’s my dual left/right brained surfacing!) My go-to outfit is a soft washed button down shirt in white or pattern, a soft cardigan in any color, smart denim, fabulous boots and scarf, with an amazing piece of d. marlene jewelry!

What other designers or brands do you like?
I find the wearable luxury of Ralph Lauren and Chanel inspiring. I love Anthropologie and Banana Republic (their not too preppy pieces). And the interiors at Tori Burch are amazingly dreamy!

Name five of your favorite places in Nashville.
Fido – When I was 7 I bought a Cocker Spaniel key chain here when it was actually a Pet Shop.
Opryland Hotel – Water and plants make for a good experience
Sixth & Pine – Avocado and turkey sandwich with fries and aoili is amazing.
Spaghetti Factory – Manager’s favorite with meat sauce and mizithra please!
Hill Center Green Hills
Merridee’s – I know…it’s Franklin, but I couldn’t resist.
Hhhhmmm…4 eateries. Does that tell you anything?!?
